Kosivot Lahan

What is 'kosivot lahan'?

This is a Kadazan phrase for having been lost or failing to find the way back. To some Kadazans especially among the older folks, there is an explanation to this phenomena.

To Kadazans who are not Christians or who are still very much influenced by the Kadazan former belief, 'kosivot lahan' is more than what meets the eye. They believe that naughty spirits are involved. Whether this is true or not is an open question.

Whatever or whoever is involved is not the intention of this blog to make known. The following are for people to ponder as to the many possibilities.

Three Hunters Couldn't Find the Way Home

One night, three hunters went looking for small game. The forest is not far from their village. In fact, they could hear the dogs barking. They waited patiently until it was about midnight. But no wild animals came out that night. There was no reason to stay any longer and so they decided to go home.

They made their way down the hill toward their village. But they found themselves at the place where they had waited for game. They went down the second time. But they came back to the same place. One of them went to the other side of the mountain, saw the lights from the houses down the other side of the hill. There was no reason they could not find their way home.

So they went down again. But they came back to the same place. They decided to walk along the ridge of the hills, reaching a village a few kilometres away. Their village is about a kilometre away. From that other village they made their way back to their village.

A Group That Couldn't Find the Exit to the Road

A teacher took some young people on an outing near a forest. The sun was going down when they decided to go home. But they always returned to the same place where they had put up camp.

They could not find the exit into the road. Upon checking, the teacher saw that the road was only a few feet away from them.

The teacher tried many ways he learned from elders to outwit what he believed was not an ordinary being. In the end, he managed to get the group out of their predicament.

The Man Lived Just Next Door

One night, a man attended a party at a neighbour's house. The houses are only about twenty feet from each other.

At about midnight, the man decided to go home. He was tipsy from drinking a few tins of beer.

After walking for sometime, he found himself at a cemetery some four or five kilometres away. When he realised where he was, he made his back home.

Who has the explanation to these phenomenon? Scientists will have their explanation. Those who are involved in cult pratices have their own understanding of such phenomenon. The Church will have an explanation of these happenings. The ordinary man can only guess one way of the other.

What is your explanation?
